Atalanta and Lazio consider summer swoop for Manchester United’s Rasmus Højlund

According to a report from Foot Mercato, Atalanta and Lazio are exploring the possibility of bringing Rasmus Højlund back to Serie A, just a year after his €75m move to Manchester United.

The Danish striker (22) endured a mixed debut season at Old Trafford. While he showed glimpses of promise in the Champions League and during a scoring run in early 2024, he struggled for consistency amid Manchester United’s wider issues. Injuries and the physical demands of the Premier League also limited his impact.

Under Rúben Amorim, Højlund’s situation still remains uncertain. With Joshua Zirkzee currently ahead in the pecking order and United still pursuing another striker, Højlund could find his game time further reduced next season.

Lazio are reportedly admirers the player’s profile, while Atalanta (Højlund’s former club) are monitoring the situation closely following the departure of Mateo Retegui. However, his high salary could complicate a return to Italy.

A loan with an option to buy, potentially involving United covering part of the wages, is being considered. Despite his difficult spell in England, interest in Højlund reportedly remains strong across Europe.GFFN | George Boxall
