Report: Chelsea lead Newcastle in the race for highly regarded £25m rated future star

Chelsea are emerging as the frontrunners to sign AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit and have made contact with his camp according to reports.

With the January window fast approaching, transfer rumours are starting to heat up, and as usual Chelsea have been linked with a number of players.

The Blues reportedly aren’t expected to be busy this winter having heavily invested in the summer, but things can change very quickly in football.

Chelsea emerge as frontrunners for Kees Smit

Chelsea have been linked with Sunderland star Noah Sadiki, and Nottingham Forest defender Murillo, but it appears another player is on their radar.

According to I News Chelsea are emerging as the front runners for talented dutch midfielder Smit, who’s believed to be rated at £25m.

The report adds Newcastle are also interested in the 19-year-old, but Chelsea have recently spoken with Smit’s camp.

I News state it’s unclear if the Blues will make a move in January as they are expecting a quieter winter window after a lot of investment in the summer.

Chelsea have previously been linked with Smit, whilst the teenager is out of contract in 2028, and he’s scored two goals and registered five assists in 25 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Romeo Lavia faces uncertain Chelsea future?

Chelsea are likely being linked with midfielders due to the constant injuries currently being picked up by Romeo Lavia.

Lavia has made just 30 appearances for the Blues since joining from Southampton in the summer of 2023, and is once again out injured.

The Belgian has shown his quality when he’s played and is an important player, but it’s unclear when he’ll return after picking up an injury last month against Qarabag, and if he can’t stay fit for a sustained period Chelsea will have a big decision to make come next summer.
