The Hokies have found their next strength coach.
New Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin’s staff continues to take shape. Over the past week, we’ve learned that former Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry will serve as Franklin’s defensive coordinator. Current Penn State tight ends coach Ty Howle will be the new offensive coordinator and play-caller. Now, we know the name of Virginia Tech’s next strength and conditioning coach: Chuck Losey.
Losey has been at Penn State with Franklin since 2014. Before coming to Happy Valley with Franklin, Losey was on Franklin’s staff at Vanderbilt for three years (2011-13). From 2004-10, Losey served as Tennessee State University’s director of speed, strength and conditioning.
Here are some of Losey’s credentials:
- Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association
- Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) through the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA)
- Sports performance coach status with the United States Weightlifting Federation
- Losey was named a master strength and conditioning coach by the CSCCA
When Losey first joined Penn State, he was the assistant director of performance enhancement. In 2017, he was promoted to associate director. Finally, in 2021, Losey replaced Dwight Galt III as Penn State’s Assistant Athletics Director for Football Performance Enhancement. Galt is the father of Dwight Galt IV, Virginia Tech’s strength coach for three seasons under Pry.
Losey made his feelings on Franklin clear earlier this year.
“James Franklin is my guy,” Losey said, via Greg Pickel of Blue White Illustrated. “Coach Franklin is my guy. I don’t want to work for anybody else in this profession. I know what I’m going to get from him every day. He knows what he’s going to get from me every day. We have a strong relationship. We’re like-minded. We have the same goals. I don’t take that for granted. I’ve got a ton of appreciation for that. I know what this profession has been, [and] have an idea of where it is right now.”
Former Hokie running back Jarrett Ferguson served as Tech’s strength coach in 2025, earning rave reviews. His status has yet to be determined, at least publicly.
Losey is known for his focus on strength training and improving speed, overseeing the development of several future NFL draft picks, including Micah Parsons and Abdul Carter most recently.
Virginia Tech has yet to officially announce any of the hirings.
