Was signing the German a mistake for Liverpool? Perhaps the plan wasn’t as strong as expected.
Florian Wirtz, one of the brightest talents coming out of Germany in recent years has simply struggled so far since joining Liverpool in the offseason. The generational player moved to Anfield because of a clear plan for the player under Arne Slot, however, the plan is not working as expected so far.
So much so that Florian Wirtz is Liverpool’s biggest xG underperformer in the Premier League this season, according to WhoScored. Not a great statement for your generational signing. While Wirtz’s ability on the pitch is not solely defined on scoring goals, it is certainly a troubling statistic.
Many will be quick to rule Florian Wirtz as a bust, but those who have watched him play under Xabi Alonso, know he is capable of so much more. Liverpool as a whole is struggling, and it is clear that it is not as simple as ruling out Wirtz as underperforming.
Florian Wirtz could be wishing he had joined the Bavarians instead, and perhaps that door could open again in a years time, but for now something’s gotta change for Liverpool and Wirtz. Both Slot and Nagelsmann desperately need Wirtz at his best in order to reach their possible heights in 2026.
