Portuguese football bids farewell to Rui Patricio.

The goalkeeper has announced his retirement from competitive football at the age of 37.

The news, released in a statement from the Federation, celebrates his extraordinary longevity and his central role in the country’s recent history. Rui Patricio holds the record for the most capped goalkeeper of all time for the Portugal national team, with 108 appearances.

He is one of a select group of Portuguese players to have surpassed the symbolic threshold of 100 international appearances.

His career with Portugal has been marked by great success. He was European Champion in 2016 and added the Nations League to his list of honours in 2019. Despite having participated in Euro 2008, the goalkeeper only made his senior national team debut in November 2010 against Spain.

Since then, he has maintained a constant presence, not missing “a single qualifying match for the European Championship or World Cup” until his final match in March 2024 against Sweden. His overall honours also include three Portuguese Cups, three Portuguese Super Cups, and a Portuguese League Cup.

In addition to his domestic successes, primarily with Sporting CP, Rui Patricio has also been a key figure in Italy. He played for Roma from 2021 to 2024, helping them win the Conference League in 2022.

His last season in Italy saw him serve as Carnesecchi’s back-up at Atalanta. His career ended after a stint at Al-Sin, the team with which he participated in the last Club World Cup.
