Former MLB GM reveals 'perfect fit' for Astros at trade deadline

A former MLB GM reveals the 'perfect fit' for Houston Astros at the trade deadline.

Houston Astros executive Dana Brown

The Houston Astros have a clear need for a left-handed hitter, and could also use an upgrade at second base. Adding a player who fits both descriptions would be the ideal trade deadline pickup for the Astros.

According to former MLB general manager Jim Bowden of The Athletic, there's one player who fits both descriptions and would be a "perfect fit" in a potential trade deadline deal.

"The Astros have made it clear to opposing general managers that they want a left-handed bat," Bowden writes, "preferably someone who can play second base. Brandon Lowe of the Rays would be a perfect trade fit for them, and he comes with a 2026 team option."

The Tampa Bay Rays second baseman, Brandon Lowe, is the perfect trade deadline target for the Astros. He's a left-handed hitting batter, and would also be able to take over at second base.

He fits both of the team's top needs, and is also under team control for 2026. The two-time All-Star earned the nod this season for his strong first half, and while he missed the All-Star game itself due to injury, he was more than deserving.

So far this season, Lowe has a .269 batting average with a .800 OPS and 124 OPS+ in year eight of his MLB career. Through 86 games, he has 87 hits, 55 runs scored, 11 doubles, 19 home runs, 50 RBIs, 24 walks, and 89 strikeouts.

Offensively, he's been one of the better second basemen in the league. His fielding is also solid, as he leads the league in double-plays turned and has a .982 fielding percentage. It's not the best, but it's more than adequate, especially with his prolific offensive profile.

The Rays may not move Lowe, as they sit just 1.5 games out of a Wild Card spot in the AL. But, if the rest of the month is a struggle, they could lean towards selling at the deadline.

While Houston doesn't have the best assets, general manager Dana Brown can work out a deal. Adding a player like Lowe would be a perfect pickup for the Astros at the trade deadline, as he fills two of the team's top trade deadline needs.
