The Philadelphia Eagles are set to open training camp this week, and the tight end position is quietly shaping up as a potential roster concern. With no TEs under contract beyond 2025 and minimal depth behind starter Dallas Goedert, could a proven veteran like Noah Fant be a smart late-summer addition? Fant, who was just released by the Seahawks, brings over 3,000 career receiving yards and 83 starts. NFL insiders believe Philly should pounce before another contender does.
The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will officially kick-off their title defense with the start of training camp this week, and the tight end position should be one fans are keeping close tabs on.
While Philly resolved its awkward contract situation with starter Dallas Goedert and added some veteran depth in Kylen Granson and Harrison Bryant in free agency this offseason, the Eagles currently have zero tight ends on their roster signing beyond 2025.
GM Howie Roseman loves to add talent in the days leading up to cut-down day. He’s acquired a player via trade during training camp in four consecutive seasons, including last year’s move with Washington for wide receiver Jahan Dotson.
Could this year’s move be plucking a veteran free agent with 300 career receptions, 3,300 yards and 15 touchdowns over six pro seasons? Insider Anthony DiBona thinks Roseman and the Eagles should be in on tight end Noah Fant, who was cut loose by the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
“It’s late July, Philadelphia isn’t going to all of a sudden find a complete TE to play behind Dallas Goedert,” DiBona wrote. “They literally don’t have a TE under contract in 2026 and Fant is better than anyone on the roster not named Goedert.
“He’ll likely sign somewhere else where he could land a starting job but acting like he wouldn’t be a significant upgrade at TE2 is silly.”
The current No. 2 behind Goedert is Grant Calcaterra, a former sixth-round pick who caught 24 passes in a reserve role last season. Granson’s one of the league’s better run-blocking tight ends, and Bryant will enter camp on the roster bubble along with 2024 practice-squad player E.J. Jenkins. Based on the numbers alone, the 6-foot-4 Fant would be the obvious choice behind Goedert as Philly’s No. 2 pass-catching tight end, if signed this summer.
This really comes down to numbers. How many tight ends are earmarked for the Eagles’ initial 53-man roster this year? (Philly initially kept only Goedert and Calcaterra in 2024.) How many tight ends do the Eagles want on the field competing for those limited roster spots during training camp?
Fant’s still only 27 and has 83 NFL starts to his credit. He wouldn’t be the sexiest summer signing, but Philly could be interested based on the current unsettled state of its tight end room.
