The Los Angeles Dodgers start the second half of the season with a 58-39 record, good for best in the National League and tied for the best in MLB. Star first baseman Freddie Freeman begins the second half hitting .297 with an .842 OPS, and 10 home runs to go with 49 RBI.

For most star players on most top teams, those two sentences would add up, and nobody would think anything different. But for Freeman, the last month and a half has been a struggle.

The nine-time All-Star started the season on fire, putting up numbers that looked incredible, even for the former MVP. At the end of May, Freeman was hitting .374 with a 1.078 OPS, all while playing with a sore right ankle that was surgically repaired this offseason.

However, since then, the two-time World Series champion's batting average has dropped nearly 80 points, and his OPS has dropped over 200 points. He has just one home run and 11 RBI over a month and a half.

When asked about his struggles in connection with his injury recovery, Freeman said the injuries are not responsible for his struggles at the plate.

Freeman, despite the struggles, is still producing at a high level this season, and his manager, Dave Roberts, is not worried about his star first baseman.

“I mean, it doesn’t feel good for anyone, but he’s just too good of a hitter, competes too well, prepares too well, that it will turn,” Roberts said before the All-Star game (h/t dodgerblue.com). “So it’s not something where I feel that there’s markers that he’s not going to come out of it. So I’m not too concerned. It doesn’t feel great right now, but not overly concerned.”

The All-Star break may have come at the perfect time for Freeman, a chance to regather himself and make adjustments for the second half. The Dodgers get their second half underway Friday night against the Milwaukee Brewers.
