There’s comes a moment late in any given college football game when the outcome is no longer in doubt, and the coach who’s come out on the losing ends finds himself mentally processing what has occurred. What does he tell his team? What does he say in the postgame press conference? What does he tell recruits, and boosters, and that guy who hands him his morning McGriddle at the campus-adjacent McDonald’s?

Our suspicion is that he won’t tell anyone what he was really thinking in that moment when it all slipped away. That moment however is what this feature is all about. The moment of clarity when the game’s result is crystallized. Folks, this is Marshall head coach Tony Gibson in the waning moments of his team’s 45-7 season-opening loss to Georgia:

I ask you: in this moment, what was Tony Gibson thinking?

a) “It could always be worse. I’m havin’ a better day than Kalen DeBoer, that’s for sure.”

b) “Do we have a medical school? I wonder if they could clone Randy Moss or Byron Leftwich. Gotta check on that when we get home.”

c) The kid who made that last tackle for us has been hustling today. Once I learn his name I’m gonna let him know I’ve noticed.”

d) ) “If I see that Stockton kid’s old pickup on my way out of here I’m going to pour Powerade all over it and pray he’s parked on an ant bed.”

As usual, feel free to include your own guesses in the comments.
