The Carolina Panthers' season has taken an early wide receiver twist.

They're bringing back one player they cut and putting another on injured reserve.

The re-signing is Hunter Renfrow, and the IR placement is Jalen Coker, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Coker has a quad injury.

The veteran possession receiver Renfrow had gotten some strong reviews during training camp, but then he was cut anyway. The trade away of Adam Thielen and this injury have gotten him back into the fold.

Renfrow is attempting to make a comeback after missing the entire 2024 NFL season.

He spent the first five years of his pro career with the Raiders. Across those seasons, he had 269 catches for 2,884 yards and 17 TDs.

Renfrow's best season was 2021, with 103 grabs for 1,038 yards and nine scores.

It's disappointing news for Coker, who was expected to play more in the slot once Thielen was dealt back to Minnesota.

Coker was a bit of a surprise as a rookie. He attended Holy Cross and wasn't drafted, but the 6-foot-3, 213-pound WR made an immediate impression as an undrafted free agent for Carolina.

He ended up playing in 11 games, starting four. He caught 32 passes for 478 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

Coker won't get an immediate chance to build on this.

The Panthers' receiving corps is led by two first-round picks, Tetairoa McMillan and Xavier Legette. They'll have to count on Renfrow to help Bryce Young and company out of the slot.
