Countdown to Kickoff 2025: 2 days until Horned Frog Football!

Former TCU cornerback Jason Verrett earned All-American honors in 2012 and 2013.

The TCU Horned Frogs are less than 10 days from kicking off the 2025 football season with a nonconference road matchup against the North Carolina Tar Heels and new head coach Bill Belichick. As we count down the days until kickoff, we’ll highlight a former (or current) Horned Frog whose jersey number represents the number of days left until the opener.

2 – Jason Verrett (Cornerback – 2011-13)

Verrett transferred in from Santa Rosa Junior College and made 10 starts over 13 games during his first season with the Horned Frogs in 2011. Verrett received an All-MWC Honorable Mention in 2011, posting 58 tackles, the most for a cornerback at that time since 2001. The Fairfield, California native emerged as one of the best corners in college football during the 2012 season, when he earned All-American and All-Big 12 First Team status. Verrett led TCU in both interceptions (six) and pass breakups (16) that season, helping the Horned Frogs win seven games in their Big 12 debut. The San Antonio Express News named him the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Verrett was once again named an All-Big 12 First Team player and an All-American during his senior season in 2013, when he was also tabbed to be the Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year. In 37 games with the Horned Frogs, Verrett recorded 160 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss and one sack along with 43 pass breakups, nine interceptions and one forced fumble. The San Diego Chargers selected Verrett with the 25th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. A Pro Bowler in 2015, Verrett played five seasons for the Chargers (2014-18) before making a four-year run with the San Francisco 49ers (2019-22). Verrett, who split time with the 49ers and Houston Texans in 2023, played in 39 career games, posting 145 total tackles, 26 pass breakups and seven picks.

Verrett pushed through a slew of injuries during his NFL career. The 5-foot-10 corner suffered a torn labrum and rotator cuff (2014), a torn ACL (2016), knee surgery (2017), a torn Achilles (2018), an ankle injury (2019), another torn ACL (2021), another torn Achilles (2022) and another rotator cuff injury that required surgery (2024).
