In light of the Micah Parsons trade, Dallas fans are drawing comparisons to another recent blockbuster involving a fan favorite. There have been multiple callbacks to the Luka Doncic trade this past NBA season – and ESPN was the latest to bring it up.
As NFL Live came to an end Friday, the panel of Phil Murphy, Mina Kimes and Bill Barnwell poked fun at the amount of fan-favorites being traded from Dallas. Murphy also asked Kimes whether someone should warn Paige Bueckers, the No. 1 overall pick in this past year’s WNBA Draft who’s having a historic rookie year for the Wings.
“Mina, you worried about maybe Paige Bueckers in a blockbuster, maybe getting shipped away from the Wings?” Murphy asked Kimes toward the end of the show.
Kimes responded by pointing out one important difference between the Parsons and Doncic trades, though. After the Mavericks sent Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, they wound up winning the NBA Draft lottery after winning a coin toss against the Chicago Bulls. That gave Dallas the No. 1 overall pick, paving the way to select Cooper Flagg.
The NFL, of course, doesn’t have a draft lottery. That’s why Kimes said it’s not a sure thing the Cowboys will have a No. 1 pick to look forward to after the trade.
“I feel bad for Dallas fans, but the difference between the Cowboys and Mavericks is Cooper Flagg’s not walking through that door in Dallas,” Kimes said. “They’re not getting that first overall pick out of this.”
Of course, Mikko Rantanen was another name to come up after the Dallas Stars poked fun at the fact he’s still in town. Barnwell laughed at the fact the NHL star got a shoutout on NFL Live, but it shows the magnitude of the Parsons trade.
The Cowboys traded Parsons to the Packers in exchange for two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark. All the while, the former Penn State star got the lucrative contract he desired. He is set to sign a four-year deal worth $188 million, including $136 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports. He will also get $120 million at signing.
Micah Parsons had been seeking a new contract with the Cowboys that would likely make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL – which his deal with the Packers did. However, the pass-rush market shifted multiple times as Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt became the first $40 million-per-year edge rushers. That meant the price kept climbing for Parsons as he neared the end of his rookie deal.
