5 takeaways from the New York Jets on NFL roster cut-down day

Some quick observations of the Jets as the dust settles on the team's roster deadline day moves.

The New York Jets have officially put together their initial roster ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

The 53-man group that made the team will change over time, as will the group of players re-signed to the practice squad.

But this first group of moves can be broken down. It gives us some potential insight into how the Bills coaching staff is feeling about their team.

Following 2025 roster cuts, here are Jets Wire's five takeaways from the team:

Only two QBs

Brady Cook and Adrian Martinez were battling for the No. 3 quarterback spot... and there is not one of those on the roster. Some teams keep three on the roster, others just two. It appears Aaron Glenn likes the latter as only Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor made the 53-man roster.

As of now, Cook is the third-stringer on the practice squad.

No prisoners

2024 third-round pick Malachi Corley was released. Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey did not draft him... but the team could still have kept him around because of that investment.

But nope... Glenn has full say with his roster.

Slim cornerback room

The Jets only kept five cornerbacks on their roster: Sauce Gardner, Brandon Stephens, Qwan'tez Stiggers, AZ Thomas, and Michael Carter II.

In doing so, Glenn is showing faith in the versatility on his roster such as Isaiah Oliver, who can line up at safety and cornerback.

No stone unturned

A Cincinnati Bengals defender works to bring down Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods (80) on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.

The Jets ended up working the wavier wire... again and again and again. New York claimed three players off of it: tight end Jelani Woods, linebacker Cam Jones and offensive lineman Esa Pole.

The Jets' new front office will look to improve any way they can.

Special teams has a say

Special teams clearly played a part in terms of bubble spots.

Receivers Brandon Smith or Quentin Skinner missed out on the roster.

Meanwhile, the Jets kept five running backs because Kenu Nwangwu is a return ace.

Special teams coordinator Chris Banjo clearly has a say.
