The Lancers' championship defense starts with a San Diego Section powerhouse that's coming off a serious statement win. Blue chip talent-laden Cathedral Catholic opened with a 52-7 annihilation of Mater Dei Catholic in Week Zero, and having a momentous regular season win under its belt should help make up for the travel.

That makes Saint Francis an underdog against the reigning CIF-SDS Open Division finalist, but not an underdog to be counted out. While the Lancers' have a lot of holes to fill, most of the starters they do return were major contributors as juniors, including 3-star OL John Fifita (USC), 3-star DB Sefanaia Alatini (BYU), 3-star LB Chase Cahoon (Stanford), LB Kaimani Keanaaina, OL Case Jacobsen, and DE/OLB Sean McCoy. The top breakout candidate on defense is 3-star sophomore OLB/DE Jayden Lewis.

Cathedral Catholic has no shortage of top-end talent either despite graduating many key players. It features 5-star RB/DB Honor Fa'alave Johnson, 3-star QB Brady Palmer (Cal), 3-star WR Parker "PJ" Johnson, 3-star OL Chase Deniz (USC), 3-star LB Josh Faraimo (Washington State), 3-star DL Bronx Letuligasanoa (San Jose State), and a small handful of other returning impact players.
