Predicting Virginia Tech football’s odds of winning ACC, making playoffs

What are the Hokies’ odds at winning the ACC? The national championship? What about win totals?

College football is here. Week 0 is in the books, and Week 1 is already here. College football kicked off on Thursday night with its first big upset, as South Florida took down No. 25 Boise State.

The Virginia Tech Hokies kick off the season on Sunday against the No. 13 South Carolina Gamecocks at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Can the Hokies win? Currently, they’re big underdogs, per FanDuel, which has the Gamecocks as a 7.5-point favorite.

So, while FanDuel Sportsbook has odds for this week’s games, it also has Virginia Tech’s odds for winning the ACC, making the College Football Playoff, and, yes, winning the national championship. It’s fun to dream, right?

Odds of winning the ACC Championship

Virginia Tech currently has the 11th-best odds of winning the ACC Championship at +4500. Ranking ahead of the Hokies are Clemson (+120), Miami (+410), Louisville (+800), SMU (+850), Georgia Tech (+1200), Duke (+2500), Florida State (+2700), NC State (+3300), North Carolina (+), and Pittsburgh (+).

In case you’re curious, Virginia has the 13th-best odds to win the ACC at +7000. Stanford has the lowest odds at +30000.

Odds of making the College Football Playoff

Virginia Tech’s odds of making the playoffs are at +1800 for yes and -8000 for no. Clemson has the best odds of an ACC team (-194) at making the CFP.

Odds of winning the national championship

We said we were dreaming. OK, the Hokies are a massive long shot at +75000. Several teams have the same odds. The Hokies do have better odds than Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina, all at +100000.

Other odds

  • Virginia Tech’s over/under of 6.5 wins is set at +116 for the over and -142 for the under.
  • Quarterback Kyron Drones is at +15000 to win the Heisman Trophy.

Summary

It sounds like FanDuel expects another 6-6 season for the Hokies. What that means recently is that bowl eligibility comes down to the regular-season finale, where Virginia Tech plays archrival Virginia. We know how that goes: Hokies always win. Why should that change in 2025?

We here at Gobbler Country feel like 6-6 is a solid pick for the Hokies again. There are just too many unknowns, from the players to the coaching staff. Head coach Brent Pry hasn’t proven he can win a close game, much less a big game. He has two new coordinators and a new offensive line coach. While all three will be better than the coaches they replaced, it’s still an uphill battle with so many new players and coaches.
