Samuel Luckhurst reveals an awkward episode involving Andre Onana that occurred at the full-time whistle in the contest between Carabao Cup contest between Grimsby Town and Manchester United.

The Red Devils endured a nightmarish evening at Blundell Park, as they were thumped out of the competition from the second round at the hand of the fourth-tier club.

After being dropped in favour of Altay Bayindir in the first two rounds of the new Premier League season, Onana made his first appearance of the campaign against Grimsby, as Ruben Amorim decided to field a second-string lineup.

Sadly for the Portuguese manager, what was supposed to be a easy outing for his side was anything but. The home team was the more dangerous side in the first half, and they headed to the interval with a shocking yet deserved two-goal lead.

After the break, Amorim brought on the big guns, and this approach eventually paid off, as Bryan Mbeumo kickstarted the comeback in the 77th minute, while Harry Maguire remained true to his habit, as he headed home a late equaliser to set up penalty shootouts.

After the final whistle, both sets of players gathered around their managers to devise spot-kick plans, except for one.

As reported by The Manchester United United senior correspondant Samuel Luckhurst, Andre Onana went missing, as he headed towards the tunnel.

It remains unclear whether the 29-year-old wasn’t aware of the incoming shootouts or simply had an urgent need to isolate himself for a brief moment. Nevertheless, the situation required the intervention of his understudy, Bayindir, who had to go fethch him.

Sadly for Onana, more misery awaited him in in the agonisingly lenghty shootouts, as he only managed to save of 1 of 13 attempts.

United’s fate was sealed when Mbeumo, the man who started the revival, hit the woodwork in his second attempt, prompting wild scenes at Blundell Park, as Grimsby’s fans immediately invaded the pitch to celebrate a historic result.
