New England signs 16 to practice squad, all were released Monday; Pats also claim QB Tommy DeVito off waivers
One day after the New England Patriots trimmed its roster to 53 per NFL deadline, a former local high school star learned he'd be working out some more in Foxborough.
Former Shepherd Hill and Boston College standout Alec Lindstrom was one of 16 named to New England's practice squad, the team announced Aug. 27.
Lindstrom, who saw action in all three Patriots preseason games at center, was among the final cuts the day before. The brother of Falcons All-Pro guard Chris Lindstrom passed through waivers unclaimed, and New England signed him to the practice squad.
Lindstrom, 27, signed as a free agent with the Patriots at the start of training camp in July. He was a two-time first-team All-ACC center and starrted 36 games for Boston College. After going undrafted in 2022, Lindstrom signed with the Dallas Cowboys and spent his rookie season on their practice squad.
The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Lindstrom later signed with the Memphis Showboats of the UFL and also spent training camp with the Los Angeles Rams in 2024 before making his NFL debut on special teams for the New York Jets.
Also signed to the practice squad were cornerback Miles Battle, guards Mehki Butler and Jack Conley, cornerback Brandon Crossley, tight end C.J. Dippre, running back Terrell Jennings, wide receiver John Jiles, defensive end Truman Jones, defensive back Kobee Minor, defensive tackle David Olajiga, linebacker Cam Riley, defensive tackle Jahvaree Ritzie, tight end Gee Scott Jr., linebacker Bradyn Swinson and wide receiver Jeremiah Webb. All those players also were released on Monday.
In other transactions, the Patriots claimed quarterback Tommy DeVito from the New York Giants and cornerback Charles Woods from the Los Angeles Rams off waivers.
In two seasons with the Giants, DeVito, who entered the NFL as a rookie free agent in 2023, played in 12 games with eight starts, completing 145 of 222 passes for 1,358 yards and eight touchdowns.
Against the Patriots in the preseason game Aug. 21, DeVito completed 17 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three TDs but was released by the Giants five days later. He joins starter Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs as New England's quarterbacks.
Woods spent most of last season on the Rams' 53-man roster before finishing the year on the practice squad. He had a tackle on defense and another on special teams while seeing action in 12 games.
The Patriots also released wide receivers Kendrick Bourne and Javon Baker.
Bourne spent four seasons in New England after beginning his career with San Francisco. His best season was 2021, during which had 55 catches for 800 yards and five touchdowns. Last year, he played only 12 games, netting 28 receptions for 305 yards and one TD.
Baker was a fourth-round pick of the Pats in 2024. In 11 games last season, he had one catch for 12 yards, and returned three kickoffs for 79 yards.
