According to a report from ESPN, an anonymous SEC coach took a shot at South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers.
South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers is one of the top players in all of college football. He has picked up preseason All-American honors and is a top 10 Heisman Trophy candidate this preseason.
However, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, an anonymous SEC coach doesn’t buy into Sellers.
While several other unnamed coaches in the league gave the talented quarterback his flowers, one anonymous coach told Rittenberg, “I can’t get behind the LaNorris Sellers hype.” He continued, “He reminds me of (former Florida Gators quarterback) Anthony Richardson.”
Though Richardson is currently in the NFL, the comparison was meant as a slight against Sellers.
Richardson, who went No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft based on his size, athletic upside, and dual-threat talent, did not have a very good collegiate career and has really struggled since becoming a professional. He has become a poster child for players with a lot of talent but limited positive impact on the field.
Explaining his own comparison, the SEC coach rhetorically asked, “Physically, he’s a freak, but is he a great quarterback?”

While there are some physical similarities between the two players, Sellers was better as a freshman than Richardson was at any point in his college career.
The rushing numbers are relatively similar, and so are the passing touchdowns. However, Richardson completed just 53.8% of his passes in his final year, compared to 65.6% in 2024 for Sellers. The former Florida QB owned a career passer rating more than 20 points lower than Sellers, too.
Richardson only threw for 300 in two games in his entire career, both Florida losses. Sellers did so twice just last year, and South Carolina won both contests. In fact, Richardson only won one SEC game in which he threw for more than 200 yards. Sellers accomplished that feat four times last season and was on his way to doing so a fifth time and a sixth time but dealt with injuries in two contests.

With the season opener just four days away, Sellers won’t have to wait long to continue proving this anonymous coach wrong.
South Carolina and Virginia Tech will do battle inside Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, August 31st. The Gamecocks and Hokies will kick off at 3:00 p.m. ESPN will broadcast the contest, while the ESPN app makes it available via streaming. According to BetMGM, Shane Beamer’s team is a 7.5-point favorite heading into week one.
