The Kansas Jayhawks got their season going early and off to a fast start with a win in Week 0 against the Fresno State Bulldogs. They were able to get that win despite several key players not seeing action during the game.

Kansas is looking to get healthy as quickly as possible. That’s not a quick fix every time, though, and now with Week 1 and the rest of the country starting their seasons, the Jayhawks are already facing another game. Ahead of that, head coach Lance Leipold shared an injury update on the availability of those players who missed Week 0.

Dean [Miller] practiced today,” Lance Leipold said. “I’m feeling like he should be available. Going through all the risk stuff. Gage Keys is probably still out. Jack Schneider will still be out. Dylan Brooks will be out. David Abajian will be out for the season. Who else am I missing? [DeShawn Hanika]. It will still be questionable or doubtful for him. I’ve got to try to use my words. I’ve got to be ready for all that stuff. Yeah, Joseph [Sipp] will be out.”

The biggest concern among that group of injuries for Kansas is going to be David Abajian being out for the season. A redshirt freshman along the offensive line, he missed the entire 2024 season due to an injury as well.

From there, Lance Leipold noted that several other players are expected to miss their next game. That started with Dean Miller, a redshirt senior who is coming off a season where he had 6.0 sacks and was named Second Team All-Big 12. Also along the defensive line, Gage Keys is out, as he enters his sixth season and second non-consecutive season at Kansas. Another redshirt senior edge rusher, Dylan Brooks, is out after missing 2024 with an injury. Just behind that group, at linebacker, Joseph Sipp is a senior transfer from Bowling Green.

On the offensive side of the ball, tight end DeShawn Hanika missed 2024 with an injury. That came after he transferred into the school from Iowa State. Then, running back Jack Schneider is also banged up, though he has yet to be a factor in his career as a redshirt sophomore.

Kansas is 1-0 going into Week 1. Now, on a short week, the Jayhawks are set to take on Wagner out of the FCS ranks before a major step up in competition against rival Missouri a week later.
