That’s too many hot dogs.
There is nothing in pro sports quite like “Loonie Dog Night” in Toronto. For the uninitiated, these are special nights on the Blue Jays calendar where hot dogs at the ball park cost just a single “loonie,” a Canadian one-dollar coin. It’s not just a promotion, but a rite of passage — and Jays fans go hard on loonie night.
Tuesday night was absolute magical, as fans at the Rogers center housed an absolutely unreal number of dogs while watching Toronto narrowly lose to Minnesota in the ninth. One loss is a mere blip on the radar when you help consume 92,063 hot dogs in an evening.
I first looked at Loonie Dog Nights in 2023, and my goodness have the Jays come far since then. In three years ago the team record was set at 61,111, which was impressive — but this new number is unreal. I previously estimated that every single person in attendance was consuming roughly 2.13 hot dogs to make up for the few thousand people who either don’t eat dogs, or just didn’t feel like it.
This new record blows everything out of the water. With a posted attendance of 42,235 we had every single fan eating 2.18 hot dogs. If we account for the fans who likely didn’t procure a Loonie Dog then every person in attendance was eating 2.61 dogs. Again, this has to include children and the elderly, who are probably only eating one dog at best to be a part of the experience — meaning that we had over 30,000 fans eating three or more hot dogs each.
While that doesn’t sound like a lot, it’s damn impressive. While I don’t want to be a wet blanket on Toronto’s achievement, it’s wild that our northern neighbors are destroying the USA in any kind of hot dog contest. It’s estimated that each person in the USA consumes 70 hot dogs a year, which honestly is ridiculous and I agree with this article that claims it’s a total lie, but still, we should be consuming the largest number of dogs per capita.
The only reason we don’t have this record is because owners are too greedy to match the $1 hot dog promotion at an MLB ballpark outside of Toronto. We need to change that.
