After a long quarterback battle this offseason, Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy has named TCU transfer Hauss Hejny as the team’s starting quarterback, a source tells On3. Both he and Zane Flores are expected to see playing time on Thursday night against UT Martin.
Flores was the lone returning player from last season, though he has not made any appearances through two seasons with the program. Instead, he took a redshirt and then a medical redshirt. For his part, Hejny was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2024. He’d see action in four games last season, retaining his redshirt, with the TCU Horned Frogs before transferring. In that time, he rushed for 65 yards.
Banks Bowen was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2025 who initially went to Tulsa. Then, Mason Schubert comes in as a true freshman from Stillwater. They both lack any experience at the college level.
The quarterback position has been one that has thrived in the past at Oklahoma State under Mike Gundy. However, last season was a struggle to throw the ball, particularly committing too many turnovers. The team’s 17 interceptions in 12 games were tied for 127th nationally.
Now, Gundy knows he needs more from the quarterback position. Ahead of Fall Camp, he shared what Oklahoma State needed to find from its starting quarterback.
“Well, obviously it’s different. We don’t have a quarterback that’s ever played a snap for us at Oklahoma State,” Gundy said. “We’ve got a little bit of familiarity with a couple guys coming through spring. But, it’s one of the things in the future of college football that’s a little bit scary is you don’t have as many guys in that room as you’d want to. I think that Coach [Doug Meacham] and our staff understand the importance in finding out who gives us the best chance to win and building our offense around that system.”
Oklahoma State is looking to bounce back from a disastrous season in 2024. Now, the Cowboys know their quarterback for the 2025 season. How it works out remains to be seen, but the Cowboys open the season on August 28th against UT-Martin.
