Michigan football is back, and so is former U-M All-Big Ten offensive lineman Doug Skene, a 5-time Big Ten champion from 1988-92. Skene joins Chris Balas to talk about the Wolverines’ offensive line, expectations for the season, and much more.
Monday, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore broke down the offensive line and said he likes where they are. There was one surprise, with transfer Brady Norton having won the right guard job over Nathan Efobit. Both will play, though, and sophomore Blake Frazier will add depth at a few positions, as well.
“Evan Link will start at left tackle,” Moore reported. “Gio[vanni El-Hadi], one of our captains, will start at left guard. Greg Crippen will start at center. The right guard spot, Brady Norton, it looks like he’ll start right now with Nate Efobi, who is going to play as well, and right tackle will be Andrew Sprague.
“I feel like we’re in a good place with those guys, and we’ve got guys behind him that can play. Lawrence Hattar, Jake Guarnera, Blake Frazier … Blake Frazier’s going to play. So, we feel like we’ve got good depth in that group.”
There have been rumblings that this group has made really nice strides in the run game but still has work to do in the pass blocking department. That could be due to facing a defense that should be among college football’s best, but there’s no question they’re getting their practice.
Additionally, new Michigan offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey is prepared to put his stamp on the program and has already made a difference, per Moore.
“The players love him. They absolutely love him in every way,” the Michigan coach said. “They respect him highly as a coach and as a mentor, as a leader, but they love him as a person, and they want to run through a wall for him. They play extremely hard for him, and it’s fun to be in the meetings and hear him talk to them and hear the responses and just the back and forth of the positivity.
“So, it’s been great. I’m excited to see what the offense looks like. Obviously I’ve been in it, seen it. I think it’s going to be fun. I think it’s going to be exciting, but we’re still going to have our DNA of who we are and what we do just maybe a little bit differently.”
Balas and Skene talk about it here.
