It was reported earlier this morning that Virginia TechLB Caleb Woodson was arrested over the weekend on a misdemeanor charge of DWI. Brent Pry has since had to address that matter publicly as he has since had a press conference this afternoon.
Meeting with the media on Tuesday, Pry was first asked about Woodson’s situation. He said there have been several conversations about the following steps regarding an internal punishment, with standards to be met by the program, their athletic department, and their university in Blacksburg.
“Yeah, obviously, that’s – you know, there’s been a lot of discussions over the last few days regarding this matter, very serious matter,” said Pry. “There’s certainly internal, program consequences at play, measures at play. And then the university’s policy, the athletic department polices – we’re committed to seeing that out.”
Among those punishments already placed on him was stripping Woodson of an honor he had earned this offseason in becoming a team captain last week for the Hokies. Pry noted that he can earn that back but, with this offense, he had not upheld what that title stood for in their locker room.
“Yeah, we removed his captain status – with the opportunity to earn it back,” Pry later added.
Per reporting based on online court records, Woodson was arrested on Saturday for driving while intoxicated, being a Class 1 misdemeanor. That’s now his second driving-related offense of the past month, per further reporting, having also been cited for another misdemeanor of reckless driving on July 30th, with a court date for that matter already on September 16th. These details come according to Tech Sideline’s Andy Bitter as well as The Roanoke Times’ Damien Sordelett.
“We are aware of an incident involving Caleb Woodson,” read the statement regarding his arrest provided by Virginia Tech. “We take this matter seriously and will handle it according to athletic department policy and university policy. As this is a legal matter, we will have no further comment until the process is complete.”
Woodson is entering his third season for the defense at Virginia Tech. He, in his underclassman career with the Hokies, has posted 94 total tackles, 10 being for loss, with a pair of sacks, a pair of deflections, and a pick over 26 appearance with a dozen being starts. That includes 72 tackles, eight being for loss, with his sacks, deflections, and the interception coming last year as a sophomore starter. That has him projected as one of the better linebackers in the league, with Phil Steele having him as Preseason Fourth Team All-ACC.
However, Woodson is not in good standing coming out of the preseason and into game week coming off another legal matter. That has his status for this weekend’s opener versus No. 13 South Carolina not yet decided by Pry.
“You know, as far as his play this weekend, that’s yet to be determined,” said
