NFL roster cuts: Lions waiving DB Morice Norris

Detroit Lions defensive back Morice Norris has been waived after suffering a concussion during the preseason.

According to Aaron Wilson, the Detroit Lions are waiving defensive back Morice Norris.

It’s obviously a really tough break for Norris, who entering training camp in competition for one of the reserve safety spots. Norris had the versatility to play nickel cornerback, as well.

However, in the Lions’ second preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, Norris suffered a scary brain injury, with his head colliding with Falcons running back Nathan Carter. Norris appeared to lose consciousness and was forced to be taken off the field in an ambulance.

The good news for Norris is that he returned to the team and even appeared close to returning to practice last week. During the team’s final training camp practice, Norris was suited up with pads and a helmet and working with a trainer. So it appears he has either cleared concussion protocol or is in the final stages of doing so.

At this point, it’s not clear if Norris was waived with an injury designation or not. If he was, it’s possible he would clear waivers and revert to Detroit’s injured reserve. If he was not given an injury designation, he will go through waivers. If he is not claimed, there’s a decent chance he would return to the Lions’ practice squad.

Norris signed with the Lions after going undrafted in 2024. After dealing with an injury last offseason, as well, he was waived and eventually returned to the team’s practice squad. He would end up making two game appearances for Detroit late last season.

But this year, the Lions had some extra depth at safety, with free agent additions Rock Ya-Sin and Avonte Maddox, making it a difficult path for Norris to make the roster, even if he had stayed healthy.
