Does the streak continue?
The preseason is over and the Washington Commanders now shift their focus completely to the regular season opener against the New York Giants. The NFL loves to put division games at the beginning and end of seasons, and the NFL season opener on Thursday night features the other two teams from the NFC, with the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys.
The NFC East has some of the oldest rivalries in the NFL, going back to the early days of the league. They also have the unique distinction of not having had a repeat division champion since the Eagles won the NFC East crown four years in a row under HC Andy Reid. The Eagles won the division last year (14-3), with the Commanders having the second-best record (12-5). The Cowboys were 7-10 and Giants brought up the bottom of the division with a 4-13 record.
Those final records line up with the current odds from Fan Duel. The Eagles are the favorites to repeat as division winners, ending the longest running streak without a repeat champion in NFL history. The Commanders lost to the Eagles in the NFC Championship game earlier this calendar year, and won’t face them again until Week 16 — and then again in Week 18. Will the division race be close enough by then for those games to determine the division title? That’s what the NFL wants to see, and that’s likely where this season is heading.
Who wins the NFC East this season?
NFC East Winner 2025-26
- Philadelphia Eagles -135
- Washington Commanders +220
- Dallas Cowboys +550
- New York Giants +2200
