The third week of high school football season in Georgia is already upon us, with a handful of major showdowns on the docket this weekend.
A few of the state’s top contenders have bye weeks, but three teams in the top 10 of the latest Massey Rankings are facing either tough out-of-state opponents or ranked in-state foes. The headline game of the weekend will come Friday night at Grayson High, but there’s plenty of other exciting action happening around the state over the next five days.
Rivals breaks down the key matchups to keep an eye on and how the Massey Ratings predict they will end up:
No. 1 Thompson (Ala.) @ No. 2 Grayson
When: Friday, August 29 @ 7 p.m.
Massey Prediction: Thompson 28, Grayson 27
Alabama’s defending Class 7A champions against Georgia’s reigning 6A winners — how about that for an August high school football matchup? The Rams come into this one having won last year’s game in a 15-14 nailbiter and are already 2-0 on the season. Grayson‘s roster is again loaded, led by five-star Texas linebacker commit Tyler Atkinson, North Carolina four-star QB pledge Travis Burgess, and Ole Miss four-star linebacker verbal Anthony Davis. But don’t sleep on Thompson. 2027 quarterback Trent Seaborn is one of the most talented signal-callers in his class, and the Warriors are coming off a 37-6 rout of Montgomery Carver to open the season.
No. 5 Thomas County Central vs. Florida State Univ. School (Fla.)
When: Friday, August 29 @ 7 p.m.
Massey Prediction:Thomas County Central 42, Florida State Univ. School7
The Yellow Jackets have been utterly dominant through the first two games, outscoring their opponents 112-7. They boast a handful of Power 4 commits, including one of the state’s premier wide receivers Jaydon Dunbar and do-it-all running back Christian Lawrence. FSU Univ. School is also coming into the game 2-0, and will be looking to pull off a major upset in the process.
No. 15 Newton @ No. 7 Douglas County
When: Friday, August 29 @ 7:30 p.m.
Massey Prediction:Douglas County 34, Newton 22
Douglas County opens the first half of the 2025 season with an absolute gauntlet of a schedule, and this game sits right in the middle of it. After already between North Gwinnett and Jonesboro, they’ll face three consecutive top-15 teams — punctuated by No. 1 Buford in a few weeks. They’ll have to get over a very game Newton team first, though. The Tigers boast maybe the best wide receiver duo in the state in Aaron Gregory (Texas A&M commit) and Devin Carter (Florida State). Newton doesn’t carry quite as much star power, but 2028 running back Kevin Hartsfield is one of the top players at his position in the country.
No. 14 Colquitt County @ North Gwinnett
When: Friday, August 29 @ 7:30 p.m.
Massey Prediction:Colquitt County 30, North Gwinnett 27
The Packers won their season-opener on August 15, defeating Benedictine 27-24 on a last-second field goal to move to 1-0. But after last week’s game against Monroe was canceled due to weather in the area, they’re hungry to get back out on the field avoid any lingering effects of the long layoff. North Gwinnett, meanwhile, struggled to get going on offense in a 21-7 season-opening loss to two weeks ago and is ready to get on track again.
No. 3 DeSoto (Texas) @ No. 11 Creekside
When: Saturday, August 30 @ 4:00 p.m.
Massey Prediction:DeSoto 42, Creekside 14
Creekside had its hands full last year in the first matchup of this series, as DeSoto demolished them 70-0. The Eagles went on to finish 11-3 in one of Texas’ toughest classifications before bowing out in the state semifinals. Despite coming in 2-0 themselves, Creekside is considered to be the heavy underdog Saturday afternoon. But quarterback Cayden Benson is one of the most underrated passers in the state. As a junior, he tallied over 3,400 total yards and 42 touchdowns last season and will be looking for some of that magic against a DeSoto squad playing its first game of the year.
