High school football season is officially here in the state of Georgia. A number of teams around the Peach State kicked off their 2025 seasons two weeks ago, but a few more waited until this week to get going. The state’s top teams have held serve early on, with Buford, Grayson, and Carrollton all jumping out to undefeated starts through two games.
But there was also plenty of movement elsewhere in the top 25 of the latest state rankings. Week 3 will be full of pivotal showdowns, including No. 2 Grayson facing off against Alabama No. 1 Thompson, as well as an in-state showdown between Newton and Douglas County.
Below are the top 25 teams in Georgia after Week 2, according to the Massey Ratings.
1. Buford Wolves (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 1
After a season-opening win over rival Milton — avenging last year’s defeat — the Wolves took it to Benedictine Military School on Friday night in a 42-14 blowout victory. Buford jumped out to an early lead after a 10-yard touchdown run from Dylan McCoy, but the game went into a lightning delay. That didn’t slow them down, though. McCoy scored again in the first half, and Nebraska quarterback commit Dayton Raiola threw two touchdowns as the Wolves pulled away.
2. Grayson Rams (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 2
Grayson opened the season with a 51-3 torching of previously ranked Collins Hill, dominating what has been one of the area’s most consistent programs over the past decades. They got a bit stiffer of a test this weekend, as Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School pushed them before the Rams came away with a 24-19 victory. Now 2-0, they’ll travel across state lines to face Alabama 7A powerhouse Thompson in a rematch of last year’s 15-14 thriller that the Rams won.
3. Carrollton Trojans (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 3
The post-Julian Lewis era at Carrollton has gotten off to a strong start, as the Trojans routed Woodward Academy in their season opener. On Friday, they continued their early dominance by blitzing Columbia 41-7. Senior running back Cameron Wood rushed for 136 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and UNLV commit Peyton Zachary had two scores of his own.
4. Lee County Trojans (1-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 4
Lee County has won 12 regular season games in a row and was looking to continue that streak over the weekend against Hapeville Charter. The two teams played two a scoreless tie after one half on Friday night, but the game was ultimately called due to severe weather. They’re expected to resume the second half of the game on Sept. 2, just a few days after the Trojans face off against Tift County this Friday.
5. Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 7
The Yellow Jackets jumped on Monroe early and had the game put away by halftime in their opener. It was more of the same this weekend as they routed rival Cairo 56-0 to keep their trophy — the Barnett’s Creek Bucket — for a fourth-straight season. Thomas County Central should get more of a challenge this weekend, as they host Tallahassee’s Florida State University School, who also comes into the game 2-0.
6. Langston Hughes Panthers (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 5
Langston Hughes dropped a spot in this week’s rankings update, but remains undefeated after an opening-weekend rout of Westlake and a 42-7 domination of winless Mays on Friday night. The Panthers will now have an early-season bye week to rest up before a top-10 showdown at home against Douglas County on Sept. 5.
7. Douglas County Tigers (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 8
The Tigers come into the 2025 season with a roster that features multiple Power 4 commits and some sought-after underclassmen. With that comes high expectations — and a challenging early season schedule. Douglas County took care of business to open the season with a 21-7 win over North Gwinnett in the Corky Kell and Dave Hunter Classic. But they did see quarterback Michael Johnson go down with a foot injury. Fortunately, he was back this weekend to help them beat Jonesboro 24-0. The schedule gets real now though with consecutive games against top-25 opponents Newton, Langston Hughes and No. 1 Buford.
8. Milton Eagles (1-1)
Previous Ranking: No. 6
Milton dropped its season opener to rival Buford in a rematch of last year’s thrilling showdown. That ended a streak of 25 straight wins, but they had to rebound quickly with a game against Florida private school powerhouse The First Academy on Friday night. They did exactly that, beating the Royals and their roster with multiple Power 4 commits in a 24-17 victory. The Eagles scored on a blocked punt return for a touchdown and later added another on a punt return to take a 14-10 lead. The First Academy came back to lead 17-14, but ultimately Milton responded with a touchdown of its own and later a field goal to seal the deal.
9. McEachern Indians (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 15
McEachern has been one of the most pleasant surprises around the state early this season. The Indians started the year with a 50-17 romp over Walton last weekend, then pulled off the upset over North Cobb on Friday night. Their defense was dominant from start to finish, holding the visitors scoreless en route to a 21-0 win.
10. North Oconee Titans (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 9
The Titans, led by Georgia commit Khamari Brooks and Kentucky pledge Dallas Dickerson, have been as dominant as any program in the state to open the season. After a 41-0 demolition of rival Oconee County, they followed that up with a 56-7 blowout victory over Dalton. Now North Oconee can look ahead to bye week before a showdown against Clarke Central on Sept. 5 — and then they welcome state No. 17 Jefferson to town the following week.
