Player of the Series: Carson Williams

The Rays top prospect is as advertised

One of the best feelings in the life of a baseball fan is when a team’s top prospect finally receives that call to the big leagues and quickly demonstrates why they were among the game’s top young talents.

Carson Williams provided fans with that feeling over the weekend as the 22-year old shortstop was called up prior to the game on Thursday. Williams didn’t arrive in time to play that day but was placed in the starting lineup on Friday and certainly made the most of his opportunity.

During his first plate appearance in the big leagues, Williams chopped a ball to the left side and then reached on a throwing error. He made much harder contact in his next time up and as he laced a ball on the ground right to the Cardinals’ shortstop Masyn Wynn. However, Wynn was playing up on the grass due to runners being in scoring position, so he was unable to react in time and the ball would richochet off of his glove and give Williams his first hit as a Major Leaguer.

Then in the 7th, Williams would showcase his plus power as he turned around a 91mph fastball and sent it soaring to straightaway center field. The ball would easily clear the fence and Williams now has his first big league homerun and it came in his big league debut.

Williams overall this weekend hit .429/.500/1.000 with the 1 HR over 8 plate appearances.
