BOX SCORE: Stanford at Nebraska-Sunday, August 24th
This match was one-way traffic from the jump. After it was tied 4-4 in the first set, the Cornhuskers went on a 4-0 run to lead 8-4 as four different players had a kill. Stanford would get within a couple points at 10-8 after a service error only for Nebraska to win three more points to lead 13-8. Nebraska would cruise to a 25-13 opening set victory as Sczech got the set-clinching kill.
In the second set, Nebraska never gave up the lead. After a kill by Jordyn Harvey, Stanford got within one point at 6-5 only for Nebraska to go on a 3-0 run to lead 9-5. After an attack error by Harvey a lot later in the set, it was a 24-16 lead for Nebraska as it looked like the Cornhuskers would cruise to another set victory. To Stanford’s credit, they were able to go on a 3-0 run before losing the set 25-19, making the second set score look a little bit more respectable. Still, the Stanford was in a 2-0 hole.
In the third set, Stanford got off to a promising start, winning the first two points to go up 2-0. However, Nebraska went on a 4-0 run to lead 4-2. After an attack error by Nebraska, Stanford was down three points as it was 10-7. Rather than allowing Stanford to stay in the set, Nebraska ripped off a 6-0 run to lead 16-7. Sczech had a pair of kills during that run. From there, Nebraska would cruise to a 25-14 third set victory as Sczech and Allick had back-to-back kills to secure the set and the match.
To touch quickly on Nebraska, what a dominant performance. They looked every bit like the number one team in the nation this weekend, defeating No. 3 Pittsburgh in four sets and then sweeping No. 6 Stanford. They are clearly the real deal and are the team to beat in the country right now.
As for Stanford, while this was a disappointing result, they at least took care of business against Florida this week and take comfort in knowing that Pittsburgh got humbled by Nebraska as well. It’s a long season and with so many new pieces being incorporated, there is reason for Stanford to think they can and will get better.
Up next for Stanford is road match at Long Beach State on Friday, August 29th. That will begin at 7:00 PM PT.
