How Colorado football players performed in NFL preseason Week 3

Former Colorado football players got their final opportunity to shine and make an NFL roster last week, did they do enough?

The final week of the NFL preseason is complete, meaning teams now have to trim their roster from over 90 to 53 over the next few days.

With numerous former Colorado Buffaloes players on the roster bubble, they got their final chance to shine and prove they deserve a roster spot. Now the question lies with the coaches and general managers of the franchises to decide if these players' dreams continue at the next level. So, how did the former Buffs do?

QB Shedeur Sanders

Statline: 3/6 for 14 yards, five sacks for -41 yards

Entire preseason stats: 17/29 for 152 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions

After missing last week, Sanders had a rough go of things in the Browns' preseason finale. His playmaking looked rough, and he took some disastrous sacks, including a 24-yard loss on second-and-12. While his offensive line did him no favors, Sanders has shown himself to be better than that outing. He still had a couple of highlights where he flashed his immense potential, just enough to secure a spot in a lowly Browns quarterback room.

Roster Prediction: Makes the 53-man

WR LaJohntay Wester

Sep 14, 2024; Fort Collins, Colorado, USA; Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver LaJohntay Wester (10) celebrates his second quarter touchdown against the Colorado State Rams at Sonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Michael Madrid-Imagn Images

Statline: 2 catches for 28 yards, one rush for 5 yards

Entire preseason stats: 4 catches on nine targets for 69 yards, one rush for 5 yards, 82-yard punt return touchdown

Wester needed a bounce back after not catching a pass on four targets last week, and that's precisely what he did. A majority of his yardage came on a 22-yard catch and run, where he showed off his blazing speed. The Ravens are one of the weaker teams at wideout, and Wester should have done enough to prove himself at wideout and as a special teams asset.

Roster Prediction: Makes the 53-man

DE BJ Green

Aug 23, 2025; Miami Gardens, Florida, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end BJ Green II (95) sacks Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (1) during the first quarter at Hard Rock Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

Statline: 2 tackles, one sack, one quarterback hit

Entire preseason stats: 4 tackles, three quarterback hits, one sack

After posting one of the best preseason performances by any Buffalo player of the year last week, Green continued to show out this week. The highlight of his day was Green screaming around the edge, beating the tackle and wrapping up the Dolphins' starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa. He's gotten to the quarterback at least once in every game, but he finally sealed the deal and, in my mind, locked himself onto the Jags roster.

Roster Prediction: Makes the 53-man

WR Will Sheppard

Aug 23, 2025; Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA; Green Bay Packers wide receiver Will Sheppard (82) jumps into the crowd for a Lambeau Leap after scoring a touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks during the first half at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Kayla Wolf-Imagn Images

Statline: 1 catch for 3 yards and a touchdown

Entire preseason stats: 3 catches for 23 yards and a touchdown

Sheppard saw the most action he's seen all preseason against the Seahawks and found the endzone for the first time in 2025. Running a nice drag route in the red zone, he showed off the speed and hands necessary for an NFL-level wideout. With that said, his impact on games has been minimal, and the Packers' wide receiver room is jammed after the team drafted two wideouts with high picks in the 2025 NFL draft.

Roster Prediction: Practice squad

WR Xavier Weaver

Statline: 2 catches for 20 yards

Entire preseason stats: 5 catches for 51 yards and a touchdown

Weaver continued a strong preseason showing with another two grabs against the Raiders on Saturday. He also served as the Cardinals' only punt returner in the game, indicating that the coaches view him as someone who might make the roster as a special teamer, first and foremost. Another team that has a weak stable of pass catchers, Weaver can easily find himself on Arizona's opening day roster.

Roster Prediction: Makes 53-man roster

WR Jimmy Horn Jr.

Aug 21, 2025; Charlotte, North Carolina, USA; Carolina Panthers wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr. (15) runs back a kickoff during the second half against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Bank of America Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images

Statline: 1 catch for 13 yards

Entire preseason stats: 6 catches for 29 yards, one rush for 5 yards

A star throughout the Panthers' training camp, Horn has not been able to put it together in a preseason game. He's had limited opportunities, only seven targets over the three games, but even on special teams, there hasn't been a true highlight play. Horn will stick with an NFL franchise, but with the room of veterans and fellow rookie Tetairoa McMillian, I don't think it'll be with Carolina.

Roster Prediction: Practice squad

S Shilo Sanders

Statline: 1 tackle

Entire preseason stats: 4 tackles

The other Sanders brother did not have the preseason he was hoping for, despite the strong start in the first week. Sanders was ejected from his final preseason game because he threw a punch at Bills tight end Zach Davidson, an ugly end to his Buccaneers tenure, as he was promptly waived by Tampa Bay this morning.

WR/CB Travis Hunter

Statline: Did not play

Entire preseason stats: 2 catches for 9 yards

Luckily, the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft didn't need the preseason to make a strong impression with coaches, because he missed most of it due to an upper-body injury. Jags head coach Liam Coen said that the goal is to have Hunter ready for Jacksonville's opener against Carolina in two weeks.

Roster Prediction: Makes the 53-man
