Harry Kane revisits comments about squad size after Bayern Munich smashes RB Leipzig

Not quite “SOS”, not quite “NBD”.

Harry Kane touched off a minor media back-and-forth last week with his observations about Bayern Munich’s squad depth heading into the season. Kane’s comments drew pushback from Bayern alum Lothar Matthäus, and the Bavarians continue to be active on the market in search of reinforcements — albeit only from loans.

But with the season beginning, there is no time for distractions.

“We players can only control what happens on the pitch. There’s a lot of talk off the pitch,” Kane remarked after Bayern’s 6-0 win over Leipzig on Friday (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Bayern Munich is the biggest club in Germany and one of the biggest in Europe, so that’s normal. I spoke after the last game, now let’s wait and see what happens. Ultimately we players have to perform on the pitch.”

Bayern’s performance was certainly convincing in the Bundesliga season opener, and Kane’s perfect second-half hat trick was a statement in itself. But judging by his words after, it seems he hasn’t moved from his original position: the squad could do with further reinforcement.

Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig locked horns for what was anticipated as a clash of titans to raise the curtain for the forthcoming Bundesliga season, but what followed was a massacre of Biblical proportions. Bayern had looked shaky in their last few outings, and Leipzig had a lot to prove after some big changes in the team, which meant that both teams, while possessing some massive talents, had chips on their shoulders and something to strive towards.

Helping us dissect the corpse left in Bayern’s wake is Rayyan (Cyler), returning to the pod after a lengthy hiatus to perform some semblance of autopsy, although it seems this game was far more about the pure joy of watching what happened than picking apart the details of what actually did happen. In this edition, we feature:-

  • A run-down of the starting XI and shape of both teams.
  • The series of events that led to the defining moments of the game, and patterns from before that re-emerged.
  • Some final (giddy) thoughts of what this Bayern team could look like going forward.
  • A lot, a lot, a lot, of uncontrollable giddy giggling at the mere thought of this match’s existence (sorry).
