The Atlanta Falcons had a bad feeling when right tackle Kaleb McGary went down with an injury during Wednesday’s practice. While there was initial optimism that the results wouldn’t be too serious, the outcome was far from encouraging. With the backup tackle also sidelined, McGary’s injury has put the Falcons in a tough spot.

“Atlanta is currently without swing tackle Storm Norton, who has been dealing with an injury of his own over the past few weeks. Without McGary or Norton, the tackle position opposite Jake Matthews is in a grim state. The current options to step in for McGary would be veteran Brandon Parker or rookie Jack Nelson. Both have been inconsistent at best throughout the preseason and training camp,” The Falcoholic’s Kevin Knight wrote.

Following the Falcons’ preseason game on Friday, head coach Raheem Morris confirmed that McGary will be out for an extended period.

“He'll miss significant time," Morris said. "Obviously, it looks like an IR, whatever the case may be. I don't know all the details of it."

The Falcons are being cautious with McGary’s injury and are reportedly seeking additional medical input before making any final decisions.

“The Falcons appear to be opting for a patient route with Kaleb McGary. I'd expect they're going for a second opinion, but they felt compelled to release something (even if it's incredibly vague). Everything could still be on the table, from a scare to out for the season... TBD,” SI’s Garrett Chapman wrote.

On Saturday, BroTalk from the Reporting Eligible Podcast added a concerning update, revealing that McGary may be heading toward season-ending surgery due to a long-term issue.

“Kaleb McGary is now leaning towards having surgery on his knee, per source. ‘He wants to do it. It’s been a chronic issue since high school.’ If surgery is done, this would likely end McGary’s season,” BroTalk posted.

This is far from good news for the Falcons, who now face the possibility of losing Michael Penix Jr.’s blindside protector. Atlanta is almost certain to make a move, whether via trade or by monitoring roster cuts across the league. With the timeline of McGary’s recovery still uncertain, the situation remains fluid — and troubling.
