CHAN 2024: Uganda aims to pull off an upset against defending champions Senegal

The moment of truth has arrived for the Cranes. This Saturday, August 23, at Mandela Stadium in Namboole, Uganda faces Senegal in the quarter-finals of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

A historic occasion: the Ugandan national team has never reached the semi-finals of this competition. As the last host nation standing after Kenya and Tanzania's elimination, Uganda approaches this clash with confidence. Morley Byekwaso’s men finished top of Group C with seven points and believe they have what it takes to shake up the Lions of Teranga. Byekwaso knows what’s required:

Senegal is a physical and experienced side, but they have weaknesses too. Discipline and composure will be our best weapons. In front of our home fans, we have everything to play for.

Midfielder Joel Serunjogi shares the same mindset:

The atmosphere in the squad is excellent. We are united and determined to make history.

Can the Cranes pull off a shock result against the Lions of Teranga? We’ll find out this afternoon. It’s also worth noting that later in the evening, the other quarter-final will see Algeria take on Sudan.
