The New York Knicks may have let Tom Thibodeau go at the start of this offseason, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have some devout supporters in the NBA realm.
According to The Athletic's Fred Katz, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo sent a strong message to his Minnesota teammates as they were taking a poll for the worst coach in the NBA during last season.
“You mother—— better not say Tom Thibodeau,” DiVincenzo said, per Katz. “He’s the f— best.”
DiVincenzo saw major success under the guide of Thibodeau
DiVincenzo’s strong support for Thibodeau likely stems from the fact that he enjoyed the best season of his career by far in his lone season with the Knicks in 2023-24. He averaged a career-high 29.1 minutes per game, scoring 15.5 points per game while shooting 40 percent from three-point range. In the playoffs, he averaged 17.8 points per game, and hit 43 percent of his three-pointers.
The Knicks reached the second round of the playoffs that season, where they were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in seven games. In the team’s first round series against the Philadelphia 76ers, DiVincenzo hit an iconic game-winning three in Game 2 to give the Knicks a 2-0 series lead.
Of course, neither DiVincenzo nor Thibodeau is a part of the Knicks. DiVincenzo was traded to the Timberwolves prior to last season in the Karl-Anthony Towns trade, and Thibodeau was fired at the start of this offseason after the Knicks were eliminated in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals at the hands of the Indiana Pacers. He has since been replaced by Mike Brown.
