Winfree, 28, was a sixth-round selection by the Denver Broncos in the 2019 NFL Draft out of the University of Colorado. He played three games as a rookie before being placed on injured reserve. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound wideout also spent time with the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts. In 23 career games, Winfree has accumulated nine receptions for 75 yards.
Powell, 27, was a fifth-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2021 Draft. The former Clemson product played in three games with the Chiefs from 2021-'24, earning two Super Bowl rings. After spending 2024 on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad, Powell landed with the UFL's DC Defenders.
In nine games with DC this season, Powell recorded 29 receptions for 418 yards and a league-leading seven receiving touchdowns. He also had an impact in the UFL Championship game, registering two catches for 29 yards and a touchdown in DC's dominating 58-34 win over the Michigan Panthers.
In corresponding moves, the Texans waived injured wide receiver Xavier Johnson (broken hand), and released running back J.J. Taylor.
Winfree and Powell will be competing for spots amongst a deep wide receiver unit that includes veterans Nico Collins, Christian Kirk, Justin Watson, Xavier Hutchinson and Braxton Berrios, in addition to rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel.
