The Jets have some tough decisions to make at key positions. There are five players who could make those decisions much tougher for Aaron Glenn
The Jets play their final preseason game on Friday against the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium. This is the last chance for any bubble players to show the coaches they deserve a spot as the final 53-man roster needs to be set by Tuesday.
There are plenty of names that are fighting for spots at different positions. Some have played well while others are hanging on by a thread.
The Jets are going with more of a youth movement in their first season under head coach Aaron Glenn and as he said on his first day of minicamp; "If you're here, you have a shot."
Here are a few players that have a chance to make the final 53 man roster with a strong performance in Friday's preseason finale:
WR Quentin Skinner
The Jets signed Skinner as a UDFA out of Kansas and he's impressed in practice as well as in both preseason games. He has five receptions for 74 yards, a touchdown and is averaging over 14 yards per reception.
A few of the spots at wide receiver are set with Garrett Wilson, Josh Reynolds, rookie Arian Smith and probably Tyler Johnson. Allen Lazard is still dealing with a shoulder injury and could wind up on short-term IR, which means he would miss the first four weeks of the season.
Skinner is battling Brandon Smith and Malachi Corley for the final spot(s) in the receiver room.
He's done everything right so far. Another solid game against the Eagles and he could make the coach's decision much tougher.
QBs Brady Cook/ Adrian Martinez
Tyrod Taylor hasn't practiced for a few weeks and hasn't played in a preseason game as the QB recovers from arthroscopic knee surgery. The Jets have said he'll be ready for Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it's possible he could be a candidate for short-term IR as he works his way back into game shape. The team recently brought in veteran backups Nathan Peterman and CJ Beathard for workouts, but neither quarterback was signed.
With Justin Fields most likely not playing on Friday, Cook and Martinez will see all of the playing time against the Eagles.
While it's been against mostly second and third string defenses, both quarterbacks have looked very comfortable running Tanner Engstrand's offense. They've shown good field vision, have good accuracy and have only one turnover combined between the both of them. It doesn't look like the Jets are planning on signing another veteran and with the uncertainty surrounding Taylor's injury, the stakes just got higher for both quarterbacks with one getting a possible chance to backup Fields to start the season.
S Dean Clark
The son of former Steelers safety Ryan Clark was the best player on the field against the Giants last week.
He had six tackles, one sack, one interception, one tackle for loss and two passes defended. The Jets safeties didn't play well last week with starter Andre Cisco getting beat on an 80-yard catch from receiver Beaux Collins that ultimately led to a touchdown. The Jets already have four safeties locked into roster spots, but if they choose to add a fifth, Clark could stick around for more depth if he repeats the same performance he had last week.
RB Donovan Edwards
The Jets have a few candidates for short-term IR and one of them could be Isaiah Davis, who's been dealing with an ankle injury suffered during their first preseason game against the Packers. He missed last week's game and hasn't practiced at all this week. Breece Hall and Braelon Allen will be the team's primary running backs to start the season. Kene Nwangwu is listed as a running back, but he'll be the team's primary kick returner and probably won't carry the ball much out of the backfield.
Edwards has made his case to make the team, running the ball 17 times for 63 yards in both preseason games combined, averaging close to four yards a carry. Edwards should have had a long touchdown run against the Packers, but it was called back due to a hold. If the Jets decide not to keep fullback Andrew Beck, the odds of Edwards making the final roster only get stronger.
TE Zack Kuntz
This is the longest of long shots, but this is more of an indictment on Jeremy Ruckert than the play of Kuntz, the Jets seventh-round pick in 2021.
Ruckert has not had a good camp and more alarming is that he hasn't been targeted once in either preseason game by any of the quarterbacks.
Mason Taylor is locked in as the starting tight end and Stone Smartt has played very well this preseason as both a receiver and a blocker.
While Kuntz will most likely not make the final roster, it's possible he could sneak on as TE3 if Ruckert has another goose egg on the stat sheet.
