Manchester City and Ruben Dias have announced a fresh contract extension for the Portugal international, keeping him at the club for a further four years.
Dias has been one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted figures since his arrival from Benfica in 2020, quickly becoming a cornerstone of Manchester City’s defensive structure over several trophy-laden seasons.
The centre-back has not only played a pivotal role in transforming the team’s backline but has also emerged as one of the club’s most influential leaders, recently forming part of Pep Guardiola’s four-man leadership group alongside Erling Haaland, Bernardo Silva, and Rodri.
The news comes at a time when City are reinforcing the futures of their biggest names ahead of the 2025/26 season. Dias follows in the footsteps of players like Ederson, who faces continued speculation over a move away, and captain Bernardo Silva, whose leadership was strengthened via his appointment as club captain.
By securing Ruben Dias on a long-term deal, Manchester City are further underlining their commitment to stability at the back in a squad undergoing gradual change.
Dias’ contract extension is also a clear reflection of the faith placed in him not just as a player, but as a symbol of Manchester City’s winning mentality. Having won multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups, and the UEFA Champions League during his stay, the 28-year-old’s decision to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium provides Guardiola with both continuity and experience as the club seeks to reclaim its crown from Liverpool this season.
As confirmed by Manchester City on Friday morning, Ruben Dias has committed his future to the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2029 in what is a fresh four-year contract for the Portugal international.
The agreement also includes the option of an additional 12 months that, if completed, will mean Ruben Dias had spent a decade at Manchester City having joined in 2020, while the Portuguese international is also viewed as a future captain of the club.
Offering his initial thoughts on his latest City contract, Dias told the club’s official website, “I am incredibly happy today. I’m so proud to represent this great Club. City are where I want to be – at the top of the sport, competing for trophies.
“The club’s ambition aligns perfectly with mine and as a footballer there is nothing better than that. I love Manchester – it is my home now – and I love the Manchester City fans. Their support from day one has been absolutely unbelievable, and I appreciate them a lot.
“When I think about the trophies we have won and the way we have played our football during my time here, I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else. My job now is to be the best I can be for the duration of this contract, so that I can play my part in helping us challenge for more silverware.”
Dias continued, “I want to thank my teammates, Pep [Guardiola], Hugo [Viana], the coaching staff and everyone at the Club. This is such a special place, and I am grateful every single day for the support I receive.
“Now the hard work begins, and I want to promise the fans that I will give everything to win more trophies and bring more success to City.”
Reacting to the breakthrough, City’s director of football Hugo Viana said, “As a club, we’re really excited that Ruben has signed a new contract and committed his long-term future to the Club.
“His hard work, professionalism and sheer dedication are clear to all of us every single day. He is a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch. He is one of our captains, the players listen to him and Pep and the coaching staff love working with him. He is the ultimate professional.
“His performances over the past five years have been outstanding and he is a big reason why we have been so successful. Every time Ruben pulls on a City shirt, he gives his all for the badge and we are so happy to know he will be here for the next four years.”
Looking ahead, Dias’ renewed deal will be seen as vital for Manchester City’s ongoing bid to build around a core of leaders who can set the tone on and off the pitch.
With speculation persisting around the futures of teammates such as Manuel Akanji, John Stones, and even goalkeeper Ederson, Pep Guardiola will be reassured by having Dias committed until the end of the decade.
For the fans, this announcement also serves as a reminder of the club’s long-term ambitions and the intention to remain at the summit of both English and European football.
Ruben Dias’ presence at the heart of defence not only strengthens Manchester City’s immediate prospects but also lays the foundation for the next generation of talent breaking into the first-team to be guided by one of the most decorated leaders in modern football.
