The Detroit Tigers have promoted left-handed pitcher Drew Sommers from Triple-A Toledo for his MLB debut, according to Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold.

With Sommers' call up, the Tigers will need to make a corresponding move on their 26-man and 40-man rosters ahead of Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals.

Sommers is expected to make his debut sometime this weekend as the Tigers face the Royals in a three-game set at Comerica Park.

Who is Drew Sommers?

Sommers was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 11th round of the 2022 MLB June Amateur Draft. The Tigers acquired the left-hander from the Rays earlier this year in February.

Sommers has pitched quite well in the Tigers' minor league system this year. The southpaw reliever holds a 2.53 ERA across 57 innings pitched. Sommers has struck out 63 batters and has given up just 16 walks, with an opponents' batting average against less than .200 and a WHIP under one.

The Tigers' minor leaguer pitched 24.1 innings at the Double-A level this year and 32.2 innings at Triple-A Toledo. Sommers numbers did falter a bit when he moved up from Double-A to Triple-A, with his ERA jumping 1.48 to 3.31, but the left-handed reliever still managed to hold his own. Sommers has also collected four holds and four saves on the season.

After impressing in the minors, Sommer will now get to make his MLB debut with the Tigers. The 25-year-old is a heavy sinker-slider pitcher, with his fastball in the mid-90s and his slider sitting at about 82 mph.

Sommers will join a Tigers squad that holds the bets record in the American League as it enters its weekend series with the Royals.
