Cam Fancher, the veteran signal caller who joined the Knights this spring, has been named the starting quarterback heading into next week's season opener against Jacksonville State.
Cam Fancher, the veteran quarterback who transferred to UCF this spring, will start when the Knights open the season against Jacksonville State, according to Matt Zenitz of CBSSports.com.
Fancher had long been considered the frontrunner, with sources telling UCFSports.com throughout August that he was leading the competition that also included Jacurri Brown and Tayven Jackson. As of Thursday morning, UCF had no immediate plans to formally announce a starter. Frost’s next media availability is scheduled for Monday.
While all three quarterbacks showed flashes during camp, Fancher’s experience may have ultimately separated him from the pack.
The Huber Heights, Ohio native has played in 32 college games and started 26 across previous stops at Marshall and FAU. He has just one year of eligibility remaining.
Fancher began his college career at Marshall in 2021, redshirting his first season. He took over as the starter midway through 2022 and made an immediate impact, going 6-1 in that role and leading the Thundering Herd to five straight wins to close the season. That year, he threw for 1,558 yards and 10 touchdowns while also rushing for 466 yards.
He followed that up in 2023 by starting 10 games at Marshall, setting career highs in completion percentage (65.6%), passing yards (2,162), and touchdowns (11). He added four rushing scores as well.
After transferring to FAU for the 2024 season, Fancher was named a team captain and started nine games before a season-ending injury. He threw for 1,528 yards and six touchdowns with six interceptions.
Now healthy and fully entrenched in Frost’s offense, Fancher appears ready to lead UCF into a new season.
“I feel like not only can I sit in the pocket and deliver, but I can also create outside the pocket,” Fancher said at UCF’s recent media day. “And I’m the type of quarterback to take what’s there. If it’s the first read, I’ll take it. If it’s the deep shot, I’ll take that. And if it’s the check down, I’ll take that too. If I need to extend, I can extend.”
