Manchester City began their Premier League season with an emphatic 4-0 victory away at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Pep Guardiola has insisted that the result should not be taken as a sign that his side are already back in the hunt for another Premier League title.

Goals from new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, alongside a brace from Erling Haaland, gave City the perfect start to their campaign. Summer arrival James Trafford also enjoyed a strong league debut, keeping a clean sheet between the posts as Guardiola’s team brushed aside Wolves with ruthless efficiency.

Usually, such a dominant opening day display would be cause for optimism, bold football predictions, and talk of a strong season to come. However, Guardiola was keen to point out the danger of allowing a single performance to shape the narrative of an entire season. Speaking to Sky Sports, he downplayed the importance of a single result and instead drew parallels with last year’s campaign, when City also began brightly but lost all sense of consistency in the months that followed.

“The start is a good result, but no more than last season,” Guardiola said. “Last season we started against Chelsea, 2-0, and look what happened later.”

“Last season also, we started with hunger and energy,” he added. “We see just the first game. So many, many points are still to play for.”

Overall, despite Guardiola remaining coy, City’s performance at Molineux certainly offered plenty of encouragement. Haaland looked sharp, punishing Wolves with two typically clinical finishes, while both Reijnders and Cherki showcased exactly why the club invested heavily in them this summer, bringing them to the club from AC Milan and Lyon respectively.

Dutch international Reijnders brought drive and composure from midfield, capping his debut with a well-taken goal, while Cherki, who started the match as a substitute, showed flair and direct running and provided a different kind of spark in attack during his 17-minute cameo.

For Trafford, signed to bolster Guardiola’s goalkeeping ranks amid rumours of Ederson making a move to Galatasaray, a clean sheet on debut was the perfect start.

Despite the convincing result, Guardiola knows there are still areas in his squad where improvement will be required if they are to compete with Liverpool and Arsenal.

Arguably, the area where City are most vulnerable at present is in central midfield, where the absence of Rodri continues to loom large. The Spanish international, so often the anchor of City’s possession play, is yet to return from injury, leaving Guardiola to rely on new combinations and tactical adjustments in the middle of the pitch. Against Wolves, City’s dominance meant those issues were not exposed, but sterner tests await.

Still, City’s display underlined that they have the firepower to match anyone in the league. Haaland’s continued brilliance, combined with the impact of fresh signings, suggests that Guardiola has more attacking options at his disposal than ever before. The challenge now will be to sustain that threat across the long months ahead, while also ensuring that the midfield balance is restored once Rodri returns.

For Guardiola, however, the message remains the same: a strong start is no guarantee of a strong finish. The Premier League season is a marathon, and he is determined to keep both his players and supporters focused on the bigger picture that there is a long way to go before it can be assumed that the City of old are here to stay.
