The swing tackle position has been one of the more important pieces of the puzzle for the Miami Dolphins' offensive line in recent years. This was especially true during the three years of recently retired tackle Terron Armstead's tenure with the team — but the injury history of right tackle Austin Jackson keeps the swing option as an answer the Dolphins need to feel good about in 2025, even with Armstead retired. Jackson has missed the bulk of training camp with a lower body injury.

The silver lining here is that it provides time on task with the starters for Miami's 2025 swing tackle, Larry Borom. Borom is a new addition in 2025 who signed a one-year, $2.5 million fully guaranteed contract in the spring. Borom, who was often maligned for his work during the first four years of his NFL career in Chicago, was someone Miami felt could be a good scheme fit for their system.

The progress during Borom's time with the first-team this month seems to suggest they may have been right. Borom collected a big vote of confidence from the Dolphins' offensive coordinator, Frank Smith, on Tuesday.

"I think Larry (Borom) has done a great job for us. We thought in the evaluation process of him in free agency, we saw a guy whose skill set really fit kind of our system, but yet he didn’t play in that system but you saw the glimmers of kind of what we were looking for. He’s really doing a good job and taking to the techniques, because a lot of it is very different. We’re going to be aggressive in how we want to set and how we want to run block, I think he’s really taking to it and you’re seeing him being able to challenge the edge of the pocket and also in the run game being really quick and able to fit up and control the point of attack."

Borom has logged 52 snaps at right tackle through the first two preseason contests against the Bears and Lions. The early reports out of training camp through the first week seemed to suggest that Borom was battling against Miami's edge rushers and struggling to find his footing — but the preseason film thus far illustrates many of the layers that Smith outlined during his vote of confidence.

The Dolphins' swing tackle in 2024, Kendall Lamm, was a very good pass protector but he struggled to generate consistent movement at the point of attack in the run game, which was a compounding variable that saw Miami's run game fold up across the second half of the 2024 season.

With a powerful run blocker now in place, Miami can hope to sustain their run game aspirations even if one of the team's starting tackles misses time this season. And if that comes to pass, this stretch of time for Borom will be critical in having him acclimated to the techniques Miami wants from their starting line. Smith seems to think it's time well spent — although no one would probably be mad if the team didn't need to find out once the regular season rolls around.
