Trey’s Predictions: Picking the NCHSAA Champions

Here are my predictions for the upcoming football season as we predict the champions in each of the classifications.

The high school football season is about to kick off in North Carolina this week and everyone is excited about the first game. Everybody is 0-0 now and all the coaches, players, and fans are optimistic that their team will be the last one standing in December.

Rivals/On3’s’ National high school writer Andy Villamarzo put out his predictions on who he thought would win titles in the Tar Heel State and his predictions stirred up several fanbases around the state. I decided to reveal my picks who I feel will be raising the trophy in about four months in the cold month of December.

1A – WILSON PREP

This team is loaded to be in the 1A classification. After going 12-2 last season losing to Tarboro in the playoffs, this team returns the whole teams besides 3 seniors who were contriubutors. They returning every starter on offense skill besides one player. They are returning their senoir leader 2k passer 1k rusher Travon Usher.

2A – TARBORO

Anything less than a state championship appearance is below Tarboro’s excpectations. The Vikings have dominated the state in football the past 20 years in their classification. On top of the history and pedigree, they are returning most of their offense and defense that just won a state championship.

3A – SHELBY

This is the toughest classification in my opinion. A lot of good teams out east fighting for that number one spot, a lot of teams have a lot returning and a lot of top teams from last year lost a lot of production. There is a lot to be unfolded. If I have to pick right now, im going with my most stable pick with Ian Farmer and Shelby High School.

4A – REIDSVILLE

Too much fire power, too many weapon generational talent. This team has a lot of talent, Neal has moved from quarterback by to wide receiver making this offensive incredibly flexible and this should open up Keandre Harrison up. Expect to see a lot of highlights from this squard.

5A – CREST

Winning is a tradition at Crest. The classification splitting from 4 state championships to 8 championships only makes Crest even more of a powerhouse. Crest is top dog in the 5A, returning Quarterback-Wide Receiver combo that will be eletric.

6A – SEVENTY-FIRST

The Falcons are elite. This powerhouse over the past two years has not been any accident. Alot of talent returning, the Falcons will have multiple 1k rushers and plenty of depth returning on the defensive side.

7A – GRIMSLEY

The spotlight is shinning the most right here on Grimsley. Not every other high school has a number one player In country at QB, Brandon Fraizer is headed into this senoir season, looking to go out on a bang.

8A – WEST CHARLOTTE

West Charlotte is coming off a 2024 3A title win over Seventy-First. Several starters from the Lions’ team will be back. Coach Sam Greiner is one of the best high school football coaches in this state as he has built program and won big will doing it. They compete in the biggest division (8A) and certainly the Lions will be tested each and every Friday night in the Queen City and beyond.
