There’s a light at the end of Kentucky Football Fall Camp. The season-opener vs. Toledo is right around the corner. The Wildcats learned plenty of lessons throughout the hot, grueling practices. Shiyazh Pete shared one lesson that was particularly enlightening.

“Coach Hamdan gave us one, breathing through your nose,” said the Kentucky offensive tackle. “When it’s the dog days, you’re in the red zone or whatnot, you just need to make the play and everyone is fatigued, Coach Bush says to breathe through your nose.”

Not only is it calming, but it also adds more oxygen to your bloodstream. Pete thinks it’s worked pretty well for the Kentucky offensive line.

“The harder stuff we do together, the closer we get together. It’s in that bond of doing hard stuff together that gets us tougher.”

No WR1 has Emerged for Kentucky

“I’m not saying that as a frustrating thing,” said offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan. “I don’t think any one guy has just completely taken that role. I think there’s certain guys who are more reliable, if you will, know where to be, play hard all the time. There’s certain guys that have a high-level of talent that gotta play more consistent, and that’s what it’s gonna be.”

Is that an issue? Not for one Kentucky quarterback.

“I can close my eyes and have any four guys out there, any combination, it don’t matter to me,” said Cutter Boley. “I trust all of those guys to go out there and make a play.”

A Nickname for Dante Dowdell

Aidan Laros took plenty of flak from his Kentucky teammates when the punter earned a zero toughness rating from EA Sports. Another player has earned a nickname from the ratings. Jay Boulware says RB Dante Dowdell is affectionately known as 88 in the meeting room because of the decision-makers at EA Sports.

Boulware’s Relationship with Seth McGowan

Seth McGowan dug himself a deep hole. He couldn’t dig out of it alone. While going through the most difficult part of his life, the guy who signed him to play for Oklahoma kept in touch. McGowan said that his relationship with Kentucky running backs coach Jay Boulware is a big reason why he’s in Lexington.

“When he was down and nobody else was talking to the kid, I wanted to still be there. I wanted to let him know that trouble doesn’t last forever. We all go through some tough times, and you’re gonna have to fight you’re way out of this. I also wanted him to know that God has got him, God is with you,” said Boulware.

“This is my calling. I feel like my job is so much bigger than just trying to be there for a guy because he can do something for me. It’s not about that. It’s about developing these young men and giving them a resource, and not letting them lose hope, so some day they can be young men and grow into grown men, fathers, husbands, uncles, and co-workers.”
