Eli Drinkwitz wrote his own headline for the upcoming decision on the Missouri quarterback battle, which has gone down to the wire.
Missouri‘s quarterback battle is coming down to the wire, with Sam Horn and Beau Pribula both pushing hard for the job. Coach Eli Drinkwitz said he plans to make a decision in the next 24 hours.
But he apparently is not ready to reveal that decision yet. Or has not made it, one or the other.
In fact, Drinkwitz laughed at his own indecision when meeting with the media on Tuesday. He was pressed on whether the team would reveal the news in 24 hours and he dipped heavily into the sarcasm he’s become known for.
“If y’all want to write a headline to get yourself more likes or whatever on Twitter that’s fine with me,” Drinkwitz said.
Naturally, reporters then followed up on the battle. They asked what the headline would be. Without missing a beat, Drinkwitz grabbed his cup full of ice, held it high and then replied.
“Drinkwitz unsure after 18 days,” he said wryly.
The bottom line: The call on the quarterback battle at Missouri is extremely close. And Drinkwitz isn’t ready to reveal the winner just yet.
“Yeah, you wish it was easy and that there would be something definitive that you could point at and say this is the reason why,” Drinkwitz said of the battle. “But that’s not going to be the case, so we’ll figure it out from there. That’s what they pay me to do. They pay me to make tough decisions and that’s what I’ve got to do.”
Reporters tried one last time to make sense of the battle. They asked whether Pribula might have a similar role as he did at Penn State in the event he doesn’t win the starting job.
“Y’all are into hypotheticals now,” Drinkwitz said. “We’ll know in 24 hours what we’re going to do. We’ll come back to it, but you don’t really need to read any more into it than we’ll make a decision 24 hours and we’ll let everyone know.”
