Brazilian star’s representatives push back on Madrid’s offer as they monitor Alonso’s plans for the forward, per ESPN
Negotiations between Real Madrid and Vinícius Júnior over a new contract have hit a standstill, according to ESPN, with the Brazilian forward’s representatives unconvinced by the club’s most recent offer.
Vinícius, now 25, remains tied to Madrid until June 2027 on a deal worth around €17 million net per season, bonuses included. In May, talks appeared to be progressing, with some reports in Spain even suggesting that an agreement was close. At that point, the player’s entourage pushed for a salary bump to €20 million fixed, with additional incentives that could bring the total up to €30 million.
Madrid, however, were only willing to offer a straight €20 million salary, leaving out the variable bonuses. Vinícius’ camp viewed the gap as too small to warrant extending the contract by three more years until 2030. Instead, his agents, Frederico Pena and Thássilo Soares, have chosen to wait, keeping a close eye on how Xabi Alonso plans to use the winger this season before committing further.
That decision is partly influenced by recent tactical discussions. ESPN reports that Alonso considered benching Vinícius in the Club World Cup semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain in July, opting for a two-striker system, before Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late injury reshuffled the lineup. Federico Valverde was forced into right-back, and Vinícius retained his place alongside Gonzalo García and Kylian Mbappé.
Real Madrid had initiated renewal talks as early as February, despite two years still remaining on the contract, after reports of Saudi Pro League interest. That interest, though, has since dissipated, with no contact from Saudi clubs since December, according to sources close to the player. His agents have now ruled out a move to the Gulf, for now.
Off the pitch, there is some unease in Vinícius’ camp about the pressure from Spanish media and how the ongoing contract saga could shape public opinion.
For now, both sides appear set to play the waiting game, with Vinícius’ role under Alonso this season likely to determine whether contract talks regain momentum or remain stalled.
