March Madness is one of the best events of the year on the sports calendar.

Constant action keeps fans engaged and often creates unforgettable moments.

When you think of March Madness, upsets and buzzer beaters/game winners are a couple of words that come to mind.

There's one player who hit an iconic buzzer beater in the 2010s that most would recognize if they saw the clip. That same player was just named head coach of the Phoenix Suns' G-League affiliate.

What March Madness hero was named Valley Suns head coach?

The Valley Suns announced on Monday that they hired Paul Jesperson as the team's next head coach. Does that name sound familiar?

Jesperson's college career spanned from 2011-2016, playing with Virginia and Northern Iowa.

In his final year with Northern Iowa, he was playing a first-round game in March Madness when the magic of March was at full display.

Northern Iowa (11) was tied with Texas (6) with just seconds remaining in their first-round matchup.

With just a couple of seconds left, Jesperson put up a half-court heave, which banked in, giving Northern Iowa the upset win and creating one of the most iconic March Madness moments in recent memory.

Jesperson briefly played with the Rockets' G-League team after being undrafted in 2016, and played for a short time overseas in Spain.

After that, he began coaching a few years later, becoming the assistant coach for the Valley Suns, and was then hired as the head of player development for the Kings.

Jesperson recently got the offer to be the head coach for the Valley Suns, which he accepted and was officially announced for the position on Monday.

Jesperson will coach the Valley Suns in their second season in 2025-26, after being founded in early 2024.
